The Idea
This started as a simple question: what happens if we spend a day making one thing well, open our home while we do it, and give everything away?
Apple cider donuts felt like the right answer. Familiar, seasonal, and worth making by hand.
How it worked
We baked throughout the day with our doors open to anyone who wanted to stop by. Some people came in for a minute, some stayed longer, some just picked up donuts and went on their way. There was no schedule to keep and no expectation to linger.
Once the baking slowed, everything that remained was boxed up and shared with local establishments and police stations nearby. The same gesture, just carried a little farther.
What we learned
We didn’t have a plan beyond making donuts and seeing what happened. We didn’t know how many people would come, or how much to make, or what the day would feel like once it got going.
Roughly sixty people came through our home. Another hundred or so people received donuts later through local establishments. The numbers mattered less than the sense that participation was easy, and that people felt comfortable engaging on their own terms.
Why it mattered
Nothing about the day was polished. The space was lived-in. The workflow evolved as we went. We were figuring things out in real time.
And still, it worked.
It was a reminder that connection doesn’t require a formal structure or a finished plan. Sometimes it just needs an open door, something made with care, and the willingness to share it freely.
